SF Camerawork, Photo Champion for Five Decades, Abruptly Announces Closure
SF Camerawork, a San Francisco nonprofit dedicated to photography, announced it will close after 52 years, with its final day set for August 16. The closure will coincide with the end of John Chiara’s solo exhibition Bay Panel at the organization’s gallery space in the Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture. In its announcement, SF Camerawork cited rising operating costs, declining public funding, and a changing philanthropic landscape. Co-founder and photographer Hal Fischer told Hyperallergic that neither he nor anyone he knew received advance warning that the shutdown was being considered.
