Shu Lea Cheang Gives Trans Artists the Wings to Fly

Taiwanese-American artist and filmmaker Shu Lea Cheang premiered “LOVER LOVE,” a four-channel video installation commissioned by the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art in Soho, on view through January 3, 2027. The museum’s largest commission to date features a 28-minute film with performances by eight artists projected across four screens mounted on tracks, which visitors are invited to physically move and reposition to create changing visual combinations. The work blends physical and virtual environments to explore the experiences and dreams of transgender and gender-nonconforming people, beginning with an animated Berlin apartment block that transforms into a six-winged seraphim. Cheang described the project as a tribute to her late friend and collaborator Aérea Negrot, a Berlin-based Venezuelan musician and DJ who died by suicide in 2023, an event Cheang said motivated the work.
