Shuang Li shows how wild weather mirrors our fractured world
Artist Shuang Li, born in 1990 in China and now based in Berlin and Geneva, presents her first institutional solo exhibition in Europe at Kunsthalle Basel. Titled Alliance, the show centers on a new film installation examining storm-chasing videos and the pursuit of tornadoes, hurricanes, and other extreme weather events, which Li first encountered through TikTok livestreams. Kunsthalle Basel director and chief curator Mohamed Almusibli describes Li’s work as making viewers feel the “texture” of technology and media rather than simply illustrating ideas. The exhibition frames storm-chasing as a metaphor linking climate instability, data infrastructure, surveillance technologies, capitalist extraction, and human desire within contemporary networked life.
