Smithsonian museum will loan more than 200 works to institutions in all 50 states and Puerto Rico

The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, part of the Smithsonian Institution, announced it will loan more than 200 modern and contemporary works to partner institutions in all 50 US states and Puerto Rico through an initiative called “50 for 50,” created with the Art Bridges Foundation. The loans, requested by participating museums and drawn from the Hirshhorn’s storage, will last three to five years and are free to receiving institutions, with the first works expected to go on view by the end of 2026. Outgoing Hirshhorn director Melissa Chiu said the program is intended to share national-collection masterworks beyond Washington, DC, while Art Bridges CEO Anne Kraybill emphasized that each of the 51 museums selected works tailored to local audiences. Participating venues range from large museums such as the Oakland Museum of California and the Queens Museum to smaller institutions like the Brinton Museum in Big Horn, Wyoming (population 500), and about 20% are affiliated with higher-education institutions.
