Sotheby’s Lands Another Blockbuster Collection as Blaquier Family Parts With $450 M. of Impressionist Treasures
Sotheby’s has secured the collection of late Argentine collectors Nelly Arrieta de Blaquier (died 2020) and Carlos Pedro Blaquier (died 2023), a group of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works reportedly valued around $450 million. The consignment includes paintings by Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas, Camille Pissarro, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir, with Van Gogh’s 1890 Châtaignier en fleurs roses et blanches estimated by an adviser at $150 million–$200 million and a Cézanne from the Harlequin series expected to exceed $120 million. Works by Degas, Pissarro, and Renoir are each projected to sell for more than $25 million. The sale follows a 2023 Argentine customs dispute over exports to Luxembourg involving about a dozen paintings; authorities waived the proposed penalty last month, clearing the way for some works to be included in the Sotheby’s auction.
