Steidl, the Art World’s Go-To Photobook Publisher, Faces Insolvency Proceedings in Germany
Steidl Verlag, the German publisher renowned for high-end photobooks, entered preliminary insolvency proceedings in Göttingen after a creditor’s request, according to German media reports. NDR reported the proceedings were opened on a Friday, and Die Welt cited a lawyer alleging the company failed to pay or significantly delayed employee salaries—by as much as five or six months in some cases—along with multiple pending labor-court lawsuits. Founder Gerhard Steidl, who established the company in 1968, told NDR that “times are very bad for the book industry.” Steidl is known for meticulous printing and collaborations with photographers and artists including Robert Frank, Nan Goldin, Joseph Beuys, William Eggleston, Joel Sternfeld, Martin Parr, and Edward Burtynsky, and was profiled by The New Yorker in 2017 and featured in a 2010 documentary.
