Stephen Friedman Gallery goes into administration after 30 years
Stephen Friedman Gallery began an administration process on 2 February 2026, effectively liquidating the business after around 30 years, and both its London and New York spaces are now shut, according to The Art Newspaper. The gallery said FRP Advisory was appointed as administrator and that it would not present at Art Basel Qatar that week; its planned solo booth of work by the late Huguette Caland was instead presented by the Huguette Caland Estate, with Lisson Gallery representatives staffing the stand and reportedly underwriting the costs. The report notes the gallery lost £1.7m in 2023, citing construction costs for new London and New York galleries and a downturn in the market; Friedman had opened the gallery in Mayfair in 1995, moved to Cork Street in October 2023, and opened in New York in November 2023 before closing that space at the end of 2025. It was not yet known whether the gallery’s 39 artists and estates would be transferred to other galleries.
