Stonewall Monument Named Among Most Endangered Sites in the US
The Stonewall National Monument in Greenwich Village was named one of the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s most endangered places in the United States on its 2026 list, released ahead of the country’s 250th anniversary. The designation cites federal actions under President Donald Trump, including the National Park Service removing references to transgender people from the monument’s website entry and briefly taking down the rainbow pride flag at Christopher Park under a mandate allowing only the US flag. Local activists restored the pride flag within days, and the Gilbert Baker Foundation sued; the Trump administration settled in mid-April, allowing the pride flag to fly beneath the US flag. The National Trust said continued advocacy is needed because the NPS has not restored the erased LGBTQ+ and transgender history online.
