‘Stopping while ahead’: London gallery Sid Motion to shut after a decade

Sid Motion Gallery, a South London commercial gallery founded by Sid Motion in 2016, will close in autumn after a decade of operating, with Motion saying she chose to end the business while its program and finances remain intact. The gallery’s final exhibition, “That Which Appears,” opens September 18 and runs through October 31, marking the 85th show staged by Motion. The closure comes amid a slower market, higher operating costs, and changing collecting patterns affecting London galleries; recent examples cited include Pace cutting 50 artists and laying off 50 staff in June, and the closure of Stephen Friedman in February with £8 million in debt outstanding.
