Swiss Institute Buys Space by New Museum, Plans Bowery Move
The Swiss Institute (SI), a nonprofit arts organization marking its 40th anniversary, has purchased the ground floor and basement of 250 Bowery in Manhattan, directly across from the New Museum, and plans to open there next spring after a renovation. The move will expand SI’s footprint from about 7,000 square feet at its current rented East Village location (St. Mark’s Place and Second Avenue, occupied since 2018) to roughly 11,000 square feet, making this the first time SI will own its own space. Director Stefanie Hessler said the purchase supports long-term financial sustainability and an artist-centered “laboratory” model; the renovation will be designed by Johnston Marklee. The building previously housed the International Center of Photography from 2016 to 2019 before ICP moved to Essex Crossing.
