Tasmania’s Museum of Old and New Art announces plans for Thailand outpost

Hobart’s Museum of Old and New Art (Mona) and Thailand’s Asset World Corporation (AWC) announced on 10 July plans to create Mona Bangkok on a landmark waterfront site in the Thai capital. Under the 15-year agreement (with an option to extend five more years), AWC will build, own, and operate the museum, while Mona will lead architecture, curation, collection, commissioning, and exhibition design; Mona representatives at the announcement included founder David Walsh, artist-curator Kirsha Kaechele, and Darklab CEO Leigh Carmichael. Carmichael said AWC’s real estate portfolio is estimated at about USD$6bn and that the partners spent roughly 12 months negotiating the contract after meetings in Hobart and Bangkok. A full timeline has not been released, but the museum is expected to open in 2029, joining other Bangkok institutions such as Dib Bangkok (opened last December), MOCA (2012), and the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (2008).
