Tate Liverpool Director Helen Legg Appointed to Lead Royal Academy of Arts
Helen Legg, director of Tate Liverpool since 2018, has been appointed artistic director of the Royal Academy of Arts in London and will begin in June, overseeing exhibitions, the collection, and public programs. At Tate Liverpool, Legg led a $46 million renovation that prompted the museum’s closure in 2023; its reopening was delayed by funding issues to 2027, when it is slated to relaunch with an exhibition by British-Indian artist Chila Kumari Singh Burman and include a new hall for large-scale installations. Before Tate Liverpool, Legg directed Spike Island in Bristol, organizing exhibitions for artists including Charlotte Prodger, Haroon Mirza, Cevdet Erek, Aurélien Froment, and Lubaina Himid. Royal Academy chief executive Simon Wallis cited Legg’s track record as the institution continues to navigate financial pressures, including layoffs affecting 15% of staff earlier in the year amid its reliance on earned and private income rather than government funding.
