Texas University Cancels Exhibition Critical of ICE

The University of North Texas’s College of Visual Arts and Design Galleries in Denton canceled a solo exhibition by Brooklyn-based artist Victor “Marka27” Quiñonez after installation was completed, without publicly stating a reason. The show, “Ni de Aquí, Ni de Allá (Not From Here, Not From There),” originated at Boston University and was curated by Kate Fowle, a former head of MoMA PS1 and Moscow’s Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, and was scheduled to run in Texas for three months. It included works from Quiñonez’s Frieze Impact Award–winning “I.C.E. Scream” series, which criticizes Immigration and Customs Enforcement by rebranding it as “Inhumane and Cruelty Enforcement” and depicting handcuffs and guns inside melting resin paletas. Quiñonez, born in Mexico and raised in Dallas, said the exhibition broadly celebrated immigrant communities and experiences beyond its ICE-focused pieces.
