The 2026 Whitney Biennial in five key themes

The 82nd Whitney Biennial opened at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York’s Meatpacking District in 2026 and runs until 23 August, arriving a week after the US and Israel began a coordinated attack on Iran. Although it has no official theme, curators Marcela Guerrero and Drew Sawyer frame the exhibition around questions of what “American” means and the effects of US power abroad, citing Daniel Immerwahr’s 2019 book "How to Hide an Empire: A History of the Greater United States" and its description of a “pointillist empire” supported by roughly 800 military bases and territories. The show features 56 artists, duos, and collectives, including participants connected to Afghanistan, Chile, Iraq, Okinawa, Palestine, the Philippines, and Vietnam, and is installed primarily on the museum’s fifth and sixth floors with additional projects elsewhere in the building.
