The curator awakens: Lucas Museum of Narrative Art reveals inaugural exhibition lineup

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art will open in Los Angeles on 22 September with 18 thematic inaugural exhibitions curated by founder George Lucas, announced on 30 April. The program will present more than 1,200 objects across more than 30 galleries totaling around 100,000 sq. ft., spanning categories such as photography, architecture, cinema, the American West, children’s stories, manga/anime, and comics. Six exhibitions focus on individual American artists: Thomas Hart Benton (1889–1975), Frank Frazetta (1928–2010), Jessie Willcox Smith (1863–1935), Maxfield Parrish (1870–1966), Norman Rockwell (1894–1978), and N.C. Wyeth (1882–1945). The museum says its collection now exceeds 40,000 works and includes the Separate Cinema Archive and Lucas Archives materials; Lucas has led the curatorial program since director/CEO Sandra Jackson-Dumont left in February 2025, and the museum laid off 14% of full-time staff and cut seven part-time roles in May 2025.
