The first Art Basel Qatar heralds a new model for art fairs in the region

Art Basel launched its first Qatar edition on 2 February 2026 with an inaugural fair featuring 87 exhibitors and a format designed to feel more like a curated exhibition than a conventional booth-based fair. The event spans seven venues and requires galleries to present solo displays (one artist per gallery), using open-plan layouts with benches rather than standard fair stands. Artist Wael Shawky serves as artistic director, while Art Basel’s chief artistic officer and global fairs director Vincenzo de Bellis said the model aims to foreground “museum quality” presentations and deeper engagement with artists’ careers. Galleries told The Art Newspaper they are also targeting institutional sales, hoping to place works with Doha museums—many run by Qatar Museums—and with visiting museum teams from cities including London, New York, and Riyadh.
