The Icelandic Collective Turning Perfume Into a Multisensory Art Form
Artnet profiles Fischersund, an Icelandic perfumery and art collective that has, since 2017, blended scent with music and visual storytelling in immersive events. Led by Sigur Rós frontman Jónsi along with his sisters Sigurrós, Ingibjörg, and Lilja Birgis (and involving their parents), the group presented a “scented concert” during the Reykjavik Arts Festival that paired perfume notes such as bergamot, iris, and white musk with ambient sound and projected imagery. The collective created a bespoke festival fragrance, No. 101, using ingredients tied to local landscapes including arctic angelica, chervil, and black currant, and dispersed it in a greenhouse installation accompanied by a poem. The article also traces Fischersund’s origins to Jónsi’s self-taught experiments and the release of No. 23, selected from 100 scents and inspired by memories of his father’s garage, with notes including anise seeds, Icelandic Sitka spruce, and tobacco.
