‘The Last Museum’ Search Engine Serves Up Millions of Artwork Images from More Than 3,000 Institutions
An anonymous online search engine called The Last Museum has launched with a database of about 6.3 million artwork images from museum collections worldwide, searchable by descriptive prompts such as “theme, style, subject, vibes.” The site claims coverage from 3,000 BCE to the present and cites 3,679 museums, 270,000 artists, and 304 cultures, drawing from institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the British Museum, and the Rijksmuseum. It states that many images are public domain, while copyrighted images are provided at low resolution under fair-use terms for educational, non-commercial browsing, and each image links back to its original source. The project is reachable only via an encrypted Proton email address and does not list individual creators or operators.
