The Monumental Impact of Indian Miniature Painting

Artnet News reports that Aicon Art in New York has mounted “Courtly Visions: Indian Miniature Painting,” the gallery’s first exhibition devoted entirely to Indian miniature painting, featuring works dating from roughly 1630 to the early 19th century. Associate Hannah Matin said the show expands Aicon’s usual focus on South Asian modernism (including the Bombay Progressives) by highlighting foundational traditions that influenced modern artists. Matin cited examples including S. H. Raza’s study of Rajasthani and Jain miniatures, Mohan Samant’s engagement with Basohli painting, and M. F. Husain’s “Ragamala” series drawing from earlier Indian folios.
