The Rauschenberg Foundation Has Listed its New York HQ For Sale, Making Way for Possible ‘Luxury Rentals or Boutique Condos’
The Robert Rauschenberg Foundation has listed its longtime New York headquarters at 381 Lafayette Street in NoHo for sale, raising the possibility that the building could become “luxury rentals or boutique condominiums,” according to the brokerage Newmark. The five-story, 92,000-square-foot property dates to the early 19th century and has been owned by Rauschenberg and his foundation since 1965; it also includes more than 25,000 square feet of air rights. The foundation said it is assessing options because redevelopment of the adjacent lot at 375 Lafayette—potentially a 19-story residential building designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill—could affect the building’s integrity and operations. The site has a layered history, including use as a home for orphaned newsboys after an 1890 sale to the Mission of the Immaculate Virgin, and it served as Rauschenberg’s primary home and studio until 1970 and a hub for his Experiments in Art and Technology (EAT) community.
