Thieves Steal Over $4.5M in Jewelry From French Museum
Thieves stole 27 pieces of fine jewelry worth about €4 million (approximately $4.5 million) during an early-morning raid on Sunday, July 5, at the Musée Lalique in Wingen-sur-Moder in France’s Bas-Rhin region. According to Le Monde, the burglary began around 5:30am, lasted only a few minutes, and involved smashing display cases; the museum closed for several days amid a criminal investigation. The museum is dedicated to designer René Lalique and opened in 2011, housing more than 650 works; the stolen pieces were described as Art Nouveau and Art Deco objects made from crystal, gold, and semi-precious stones. Wingen-sur-Moder mayor Christian Dorschner said the pieces were “unsellable” and criticized the private security company for not intervening promptly or notifying the gendarmes despite alarms and CCTV functioning.
