This Giant Spider at Frieze London Will Transport You to a Digital World
Greek new media artist Theo Triantafyllidis (born 1988 in Athens) will present a monumental, climbable spider installation at Frieze London as the 2026 Frieze Artist Award winner. Titled “Feral Metaverse (Spider),” the work functions as a physical interface for an interactive video game that invites visitors to search the sculpture for controls and screens to enter Triantafyllidis’s deliberately tactile and awkward “Feral Metaverse.” The artist, trained originally as an architect and an MFA graduate of UCLA’s Design Media Arts program (2016), describes the project as an alternative to Silicon Valley’s “frictionless” metaverse vision. A demo of the digital environment is available on Steam and depicts an arid, desertlike terrain intended to test how players cooperate or compete without verbal communication.
