Too hot to handle: Smithsonian museums shut down due to cooling system failure

Seven Smithsonian buildings in Washington, DC, closed abruptly on 6 August after a mechanical failure disrupted chilled water needed for cooling systems and humidity controls. The affected sites along the southern edge of the National Mall are the National Museum of the American Indian, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, National Museum of Asian Art, National Museum of African Art, Smithsonian Castle, Arts and Industries Building, and the S. Dillon Ripley Center. The Smithsonian said the outage originated at the General Services Administration’s Heating Operations and Transmission Division plant and that normal operations will resume once the issue is resolved, without giving a timeline.
