Tracey Emin: 'Racist behaviour is dividing our country'

British artist Tracey Emin spoke out against what she called “jingoistic, racist, bigoted behaviour” as her major exhibition “Second Life” opened at Tate Modern in London, following a press preview on 25 February 2026. In an interview published 26 February 2026, Emin said she chose Tate Modern over Tate Britain because it was a bigger “challenge,” and emphasized that the show is thematic rather than a retrospective. The exhibition includes a gallery addressing racism experienced by Emin and her family, and she discussed her multicultural heritage, including her father Enver’s Turkish Cypriot background and her mother’s Romanichal roots. Emin also referenced Reform UK leader Nigel Farage’s attempts to win Margate, where she grew up and returned to live permanently in 2020.
