Uffizi Galleries in Florence announce ‘unprecedented’ €50m revamp

Florence’s Gallerie degli Uffizi announced an “unprecedented” €50 million revamp spanning the Uffizi Gallery, Palazzo Pitti, and the 11-acre Boboli Gardens, with completion expected within two years. Planned work includes new lighting, redesigned displays, updated labels and signage, accessibility improvements, and new air-handling systems to improve conservation, with director Simone Verde saying the changes will “radically transform the face” of Italy’s most visited art museum. Funding will come half from ticket sales and half from Italian culture ministry redevelopment funds, and the program was initiated or planned after Verde took office in 2024. Specific projects include a €2.4 million introductory exhibition space on the collection’s history at the Uffizi, a €4.9 million conversion of Palazzo Pitti’s 1,000 sq. m “Piano degli Occhi” into exhibition space, and a €3 million restoration of the Boboli Gardens’ amphitheatre, plus restoration of the Fountain of Neptune; the restored Flemish Masters rooms reopened in July 2024.
