UK AIDS Memorial Quilt to Come Home to Scotland
The UK AIDS Memorial Quilt will return to Scotland for a full exhibition at Glasgow’s Tramway beginning Saturday, September 12, running through October 4, marking the first time it will be shown in its entirety in its home country. The project was founded in 1989 by Scottish activist Ally Van Tillo, who died on August 30, and was created four years after Cleve Jones began the US AIDS Quilt in San Francisco in 1985. First displayed at London’s Hyde Park in 1994, the UK quilt has grown to 335 panels commemorating more than 600 people; many panels are three-by-six feet, echoing the dimensions of a grave plot. After nearly two decades in storage and a display at Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall last year, the Tramway presentation will include archival material on the quilt’s Scottish origins and Van Tillo’s statement about its role in bereavement, education, and countering stigma.
