Ukraine adopts resolution to aid evacuation of artefacts from front line
Ukraine has adopted a government resolution intended to simplify the evacuation of more than three million pieces of cultural property from frontline areas as the war with Russia enters its fifth year. In an 18 February 2026 announcement, the culture ministry said the measure creates clearer rules and greater flexibility, including allowing institution heads to act independently in emergencies and establishing a three-stage evacuation system based on an object’s value. Culture minister Tetyana Berezhna said 50km from the front line is now a mandatory evacuation zone and that items must be moved at least 75km away, amid ongoing theft and damage to museum collections and continued Russian occupation in parts of Ukraine.
