Unesco-protected monastery in Lviv damaged by Russian drone strike
A Russian drone strike on March 24, 2026, damaged buildings in the historic center of Lviv, Ukraine, including a Unesco-protected area around the 17th-century Bernardine Monastery and St. Andrew’s Church; city officials said at least 27 people were injured. Unesco said on March 25 it was “deeply alarmed” by the strikes within the World Heritage property “L’viv—the Ensemble of the Historic Centre,” which was inscribed in 1998 and added to the List of World Heritage in Danger in 2023. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Iranian-designed Shahed drones were used, and Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha urged Venice Biennale organizers to reconsider allowing Russia to participate, while Ukraine’s Institute of National Remembrance called for Russia’s Unesco membership to be revoked. Officials said the attack was part of a nearly 1,000-drone-and-missile aerial assault described as Russia’s largest since its full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
