Valerie Hillings appointed inaugural director of Guggenheim Abu Dhabi

Valerie Hillings, director of the North Carolina Museum of Art (NCMA) since 2018, has been appointed the inaugural director of Guggenheim Abu Dhabi ahead of its opening later this year. The museum, on Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi, is scheduled to open on 11 December, according to the Department of Culture and Tourism–Abu Dhabi; plans were first unveiled in 2006 and the cost has not been disclosed. NCMA reported 1.17 million visitors across its Raleigh and Winston-Salem campuses in fiscal year 2025. Hillings previously worked on the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi project from 2009 to 2018, overseeing collection strategy and acquisitions, and organised a 2017 exhibition, The Creative Act, featuring artists including Rasheed Araeen and Mohammed Kazem.
