Van Gogh’s exuberant ‘Tarascon Stagecoach’ will go on show in New York

Vincent van Gogh’s painting Tarascon Stagecoach (October 1888), made in Arles, will be shown in New York as part of the touring exhibition “Cézanne to Modigliani: Gifts of Modern Art from the Pearlman Collection.” The work—one of 63 pieces being donated by the Henry and Rose Pearlman Foundation to three major US museums—was given to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and unveiled there earlier in 2026. It will travel to the Brooklyn Museum from 2 October 2026 to 18 April 2027, then to New York’s Museum of Modern Art later in 2027 with the rest of the Pearlman gifts. Van Gogh described the picture’s colors in a 13 October 1888 letter to his brother Theo, though the pink wall pigment has since faded, while the red “Service de Tarascon” sign remains visually prominent.
