What We Loved (And Didn’t) in “Greater New York”
Hyperallergic reviews MoMA PS1’s “Greater New York,” a large survey attempting to capture the city’s art scene with more than 150 works by more than 50 artists. The article presents a selective, opinionated roundup of around 20 artists, dividing responses into works the writers loved, disliked, or remained uncertain about, with commentary by Lisa Yin Zhang, Hrag Vartanian, Rhea Nayyar, and Hakim Bishara. Among highlighted projects are Dean Millien’s aluminum-foil sculptures and an immersive installation by the grassroots collective Red Canary Song addressing migrant massage work, sex work, and other forms of precarious intimate labor in New York. Rather than a comprehensive catalog, the piece frames the exhibition as inherently unwieldy—reflecting New York’s scale and competing viewpoints—while offering specific reactions to individual works.
