Why I launched a new photobook imprint—veteran bookseller and publisher reveals next career move

Veteran bookseller and publisher Rudi Thoemmes has launched a new photobook imprint, Foxed Editions, with Björn Andersson and Jessa Fairbrother, expanding on his earlier work with Thoemmes Press and RRB Photobooks. The imprint focuses on facsimiles of overlooked historical photobooks and new publications that map neglected areas of photographic history, aiming to broaden narratives beyond a familiar canon. Its first titles include a republication of Fred Judge’s Camera Pictures of London at Night (1924) and Thomas Wiegand’s 66 Books from East Germany, which Thoemmes argues reveals a complex visual culture not reducible to state propaganda. In the interview, Thoemmes cites his 2024 test case Trees of Britain and Ireland, originally published in seven volumes from 1906 to 1913, as an example of historically important photography-related material that had fallen outside mainstream attention.
