Works from Marian Goodman’s Collection to Anchor Christie’s May Sales

Christie’s will sell works from dealer Marian Goodman’s personal collection in its May marquee sales in New York, months after her death in January at age 97, with the group expected to total about $65 million. The sale is led by seven Gerhard Richter paintings from 1982–2009, offered at the start of the 21st Century Evening Sale on 20 May, including Richter’s 1982 Kerze (Candle) estimated at $35 million to $50 million. Goodman began representing Richter in 1985 and helped build his US market by placing works with institutions while retaining key examples; Richter later moved to David Zwirner in 2022. Additional works will be offered in a day sale and an online auction, sourced from Goodman’s family and excluding artists currently represented by her gallery.
